The hand ringing about our oil and natural gas supplies started in
1919: “The auto industry could no longer ignore the fact that only 20
years worth of U.S. oil is left. ‘The burden falls upon the engine. It
must adapt itself to less volatile fuel, and it must be made to burn the
fuel with less waste…. Automotive engineers must turn their thoughts
away from questions of speed and weight… and comfort and endurance, to
avert what … will turn out to be a calamity, seriously disorganizing an
indispensable system of transportation.’” – From a 1919, Scientific
American article
America’s oil, natural gas and coal resources are equivalent to 1.3
trillion barrels of oil, the largest proven reserves in the world. Not
exploiting these energy resources has funded our enemies, caused three
recent wars killing over 6000 of our military and countless civilians,
and arguably caused the terrorist attacks on the United States.
Those
who make the false impression that the United States cannot produce its
own energy through natural resources, those who try to force energy
alternatives by blocking exploration and harvesting, those who choose
the unlikely risk to the environment over lives and livelihoods of
people have the blood of these Americans and the civilians in the
countries we fight on their hands just as if they pulled the trigger
themselves.
We have the supply and we can mine, drill, and process it safer and
more environmentally clean than any other country in the world. Yet we
export the environmental risks to less skilled countries and force our
hand to take up arms and go to war.
We have the energy resources
in America to sustain ourselves with a certain overproduction that could
be exported. As long as we outsource the dangers and environmental
impact to the Middle East, we will need to send more kids to die and the
terrorists’ killing of innocents will continue.
Government policy to ignore our energy potential causes death in this
world. And for those who try to think globally, oil spills on the
other side of the world still occur on our planet. As the safest, most
environmentally protected nation, with skills that are used worldwide,
the United States is actually the most responsible nation for harvesting
natural resources.
Protecting the environment, stopping
terrorism, and saving lives by ending our involvement in the Middle East
wars begin with exploiting our own resources.
